The National Electrification Administration (NEA) ventured into a feasibility study contract with Madrid-based engineering consultancy firm Osprel SL to explore the possibility of connecting Camiguin island to the Mindanao electricity grid via submarine power cables.
NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda and Osprel SL Chief Executive Officer Maria Inmaculada Blázquez Garcia signed the agreement in a ceremony held Tuesday, 06 May 2025, at the NEA Building in Diliman, Quezon City.
Present to witness the ceremonial signing were Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol with Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Utray Delgado among other stakeholders.
The project covers the electrical, bathymetric, meteorological and environmental studies aimed at providing more reliable energy supply to the island of Camiguin.
“A detailed technical project will be drawn up for the optimized submarine connection that will enable the development of the project and its future construction. This connection will allow the integration of renewables in Camiguin,” according to the contract.
Camiguin is an island province located in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao. It is powered by the Camiguin Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CAMELCO), the lone energy distribution service provider in the island based in Mambajao.###
